Two Suitcases, all the money you have saved, your loved ones, tears, those who can not come with you, those who always stay on the other side... and then you are going to completely disappear...There is a quote by Emily Dickinson which says “death and distance are the same. Once you are gone, you are gone.”

Distance is physical, emotional, and psychological. It falls into all sorts of categories, and for me it is also paralyzing, heartbreaking, numbing, and nauseating. You feel it every time you are not understood, or when your communication abilities fail. And then you realize all you have heard about being just one phone call away, is a big lie.

I am interested in emotional and psychological aspect of distance. When home is where you never are, when you get used to things you were afraid of, when you become numb, oblivion becomes part of your everyday life, and you lose control over miles and hours.

I love sharing experiences and stories because I have to trust my ears more than my eyes and believing that everything is always all right on the other side, although they hide their suffering.

With my work, I try to connect to people, by questioning how distance affects them from different ethnicities and how they survive this forever waiting and manage their negative presence in their families.

I read blogs, books and interviews to learn about the proper language for distance. Language has always played a huge role in transforming my feelings into a visual experience. I have passed all those dark moments when I have stumbled over a word or a phrase, or I heard chuckles because of mispronunciation. Not only the words, but also pauses are meaningful to me, especially when I am asked if I’m going to stay or leave. I like that hesitation. It shows that something has changed or maybe grown inside me.

Denial is another part of being distant. There are always small things you don’t want to change, although you have become resilient. You want to resist transforming. Then comes loneliness and solitude. Loneliness makes you strange and your strangeness makes you lonelier.

When I left, I didn’t have a clue of what to expect or how to deal with all these emotions and changes. I’m still not sure why I left or where I end up, but I’m sure this poem by Rachel Wetzsteon says it all:
High above the city, my lips are frozen shut, but my mind is saying, come on and turn your head, and the rest will follow.
Stay where you are, but realize what I went through.
There was so much mist between the dark streets and the familiar landing,
That I never got the views I wanted.

·      Research/Writing Process
o   I love working with objects and considering how they can communicate a concept to a targeted audience most effectively.
o   Each object is a denotation but has a rich visual, conceptual, cultural and identity driven connotation.
o    When working, I write, speak to people who use the object, look into its history, write some more, and begin a  complex process of 2d and 3d design, followed by material acquisition and potential outsourcing to make the work as realistic and flawlessly executed within a specific budget and timeline as possible.
o   The emphasis should be on the emotions the object calls to mind, the range of experiences and feelings it has the power to evoke, rather than its execution.
o   This means each object must be flawless.

o   employ a variety of 3d and 2d design programs to visualize the work

§  understand the material properties/costs to carry on an informed conversation with the manufacturer in question
§  be firm but flexible- know when to stand my ground and when the idea has to change over time according to cost and material demands.

Designwork (Not made yet)
I have also included a specific line of products here:
§  geared towards the feminine in design (although I can design for a broader audience)
§  This innovative line of jewelry, furniture, lighting, and tableware questions the notion of nurturing, nostalgia, safety, and the home.

RO-LAN-DO Statement

Artist Statement
MFA Rolando Palacio

I remember his guitar playing.  The strings some how were being held on with rusty nuts and sometimes when he would get to much into a song he would strum the chords to hard that they would fall from in-between the wedges made to hold them in place.  I first heard about him from a couple young guys that I befriended and were on the move to find the next drug pushing deal.  He was the person that kept everybody entertained and made them forget about all their misfortunes.  That was how he would make his money and how he was able to survive the streets after you couldn’t get anymore free meals from the comedore that would feed you two meals a day for up to a week if you got in really good with the priest running the place.  I just sat with him and I told him how I loved music.  I used to play music when I was young.  That’s what saved my life.  It got me into art and made me feel like I could control something.  Like I could mold something without having something or someone control everything.  We just sat there and he started to talk to me about his love for music.  He talked to me about how he grew up in the states but was born in Mexico.  He was one of those unfortunate people that never got a green card but made a life from a very young age in the states.  He was in his mid 40’s now with a wife and children in the states.  I sat there and talked to him and it felt like I was talking to my best friend from Texas.  Just two music freaks connecting over an old beat up guitar.  He told me about how he was going to head out that same night.  He was going to sell his guitar to get some money to pay for the guide and for the tax the mafia enforces when crossing the border.  He looked at me and he asked me for a huge favor.  He asked if I would call his wife in Tucson and tell her the he was going to be on-line singing and playing his guitar.  As he finished his sentence his words ended with “ I don’t think I’m going to make it this time.”

We sat there as the sun cut across our faces and I wondered how hard each space seemed to be and how it changed constantly.  One moment you were feeling good while playing a song about your good old confidence and the next your crawling for life as the sun cuts your life so short.  The shadows separate the ones that want to be viewed from the ones that try to hide but there faces fade everyday.  For some they never show up again.  The desert seems to do that to you.  It makes you think that it’s really easy to just walk across the next hill and the city must just be there.  That isn’t the story old man, you have to watch your back 24/7.  Money is what where chasing, just trying to make that pocket fat, trying to make it easier and trying to hide from what’s in those shadows that are constantly chasing me.  Sometimes you don’t know what in the other side but when you cross it there’s another gamble and you constantly have to think of that damn sun.  It’s always looking at you, always burning you back and every damn inch of your body.  These shadows are like barriers constantly separating you and me from each other.  I really want YOU to tell ME how dreams are made cause everybody hear has a damn dream.  But those dreams are sometimes a little do dark for me if you know what I mean.  You gotta keep chasing that mirage cabron.  It will somehow show up.  I know it will.  Hahahahaha, you’ll see.
